Biotechnology is technological application that utilize biological system or its derivative in order to create or modify a product/processing method that can be used for certain purposes. With the increasing role of aquaculture in supplying fish for varied purpose (Human consumption, recreational, raw materials for industry, tourism, and conservation) biotechnology also plays an important function in increasing aquaculture productivity and efficiency especially in facing ASEAN Free Trade Area.

Department of Aquaculture has successfully organized four National Aquaculture Biotechnology symposiums (2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014) which received excellent responses from all Indonesian aquaculture stakeholders and attended by more than 250 participants. The participant of this symposium comes from various backgrounds such as: higher institutions/university, research institutions, students, government agencies, entrepreneurs, and people from aquaculture industries. In previous symposium, around 50 oral presentations and 20 posters were presented by various authors. This symposium was also supported by 35 sponsors that come from government or private sector.
